Each year, SAP-VN presents one special award, the "Compassion Award", to one individual or group who has contributed significantly to the charitable mission of SAP-VN. This year, the "Compassion Award" is given to artist Hồ Thành Đức and artist Bé Ký, a husband and wife team.

Bé Ký and Hồ Thành Đức are famous Vietnamese artists with their own unique painting style. Bé Ký became an artist through her sheer determination and love of painting. She learned painting by herself with periodic tutoring from other established artists at the time. Bé Ký uses her unique and self-taught style of sketching with pen brush on paper and silk to describe the multifacet of daily life of common Vietnamese through her eyes. Through her paintings, one can gain special insights into the life and struggle of common Vietnamese.
Artist Hồ Thành Đức, in contrast, incorporates both the Vietnamese lacquer and Western collage painting styles to record the pain and struggle of generations of Vietnamese through years of wars.

Paintings by Bé Ký and Hồ Thành Đức have been shown and loved in galleries in countries such as Vietnam, Japan, France, Poland, and India. In the US, their paintings have been displayed in institutions like the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC, the Harry Truman Gallery, the John Art Collection, and the Artists for Human Right Arts show.
Both Bé Ký and Hồ Thành Đức are well-known contributors to charitable causes. They generously contributed their paintings to fundraising functions to help the poor in either the United States or Vietnam. They often contribute one painting for each fundraising activity. For SAP-VN, however, they are especially generous. They have donated more than 30 paintings to our annual fundraising dinner "A Gift of Hope" to raise funds for the Orthopedic Surgery Program.
Proceeds from their paintings have helped us sponsor corrective surgeries for hundreds of children with physical disability. Their generosities brought joy to children with disability and their families. Because of their compassion, and their outstanding contribution to the Orthopedic Surgery Program, SAP-VN presents artists Bé Ký and Hồ Thành Đức with this year's "Compassion Award 2010."
